In France, industrial hydrogen production represents more than 900,000* tons per year. 
The three most important markets are desulphurisation of petroleum fuels (60%), ammonia synthesis mainly for fertilisers (25%) and chemistry (10%).. 
94% is produced from fossil fuels in France (gas, coal, hydrocarbons). Hydrogen production is responsible for the emission of 11.5 million tonnes of CO₂ in France, i.e. around 16% of national emissions. 

The decarbonisation of hydrogen is an important lever for the ecological transition and one of the major focuses of the national hydrogen deployment plan presented on 1^st June 2018 by the Ministry for the Ecological and Solidarity Transition.
